What is the name of your state? Minnesota

I have been at my part time position for approximately four months. I went into work on this past Friday June 9th. My mangager stated that she needed to speak with me, so we went to a private location. After much delay on her part, she stated that she was having issues with some of the other employees and my personality. In short, I was fired because other employees did not like my personality. I have had no previous warning, verbal or written. I was a hard working employee for the duration of my employment with that company. I am unable to collect unemployment because I have another full time position. My personality is deifnetly different than the other employees, but that is only because of my ethnicity. I was the only African American employee, and I feel that the other employees issues had to do with that issue, because my ethnicity is a LARGE part of my personality. What legal action can I take against this company? Not necassarily looking for a large monetary settlement, but I would like to know that any African American who would choose to work for this organization would be treated fairly.

If you think you were fired because of your race, you can contact EEOC. However, I don't buy the argument that your ethnicity is a large part of your personality. If there were true, most Afro-Americans would have distinctly similar personalities and, of course, that's not true. What you suggest is a variation of the stereotyping that the Civil Rights Movement has spent decades trying to eliminate.

Please don't call us Afro-Americans. How rude!

Why is that rude?

African Americans, are also known as Afro-Americans or black Americans. Get a grip, the term is used very widely in education, social and governement organizations including African American organizations. Get over yourself

No need to get a grip. I still think its rude to describe someone by their HAIR? Come on.

Afro-
pref.
African: Afro-Asiatic.

There is a distinct difference when the word afro is used as a prefix, versus a noun.

Not trying to start an argument about why something is or isn't acceptable. It was a comment. That's all.

And unfortunately, in these days of political correctness, there isn't any way to make everyone happy as what is one person's preference, offends another.

You're exactly right. It was simply a comment. And when I wrote it, I wasn't even being serious. (Although I do think its rude). Now, I did think it was a little "old", meaning that I didn't even know people used that term anymore. But, all in all, its not about "my people" or yours, because my people and your people (I really do hate that "you people" stuff), probably use lots of colorful names for the other, but my parents taught me not to use those words.

How idiotic! How do you know that I'm not Black?
I don't. I don't know a thing about anybody on this forum. I've never called anyone an idiot, and had never been called, one, until now.

Guys, it was just a comment. That's it. I was making fun of the "Afro", that's why it was highlighted. I apologize for the confusion, the concern, the out-of-line (apparently) comment. I certainly had no idea, and didn't mean to offend anyone, and certainly never expected to defend myself, because I didn't expect this to be an all out war!

Sorry. Have a good day!:D

My response:

I've got an old sign from the 1950's hanging in my office that I bought from an antique store. It reads:

"No N e g r o e s. Whites Only!"

I like it for its historical value. But, when Blacks walk into my office, they're the first ones to make a comment, and then I sign them up!

It's a terrific conversation piece of our history.

I didn't call you an idiot; I called your statement idiotic. I'm not offended; just annoyed. I'll take a deep breath and calm down. I've over-reacted.
