What is the name of your state? Nevada

Hi
How hard is it to terminate someone's parental rights without a lawyer? Someone told me once that if I had no way of getting in touch with the father that I could run an ad in the paper looking for him in the particular state that I think he is in. Is this correct?

Would his parental rights be terminated if I did all of this and he never responded?

I do know his family though, but he told them not to give out his phone number to me or address, etc. Would I have to mention to a judge that I'm really good friends with his family, and if I did would the judge make me get in touch with him through them or something like that?

Thanks for the info
Take care,

While it is possible for a person to have the other parent's rights legally terminated, based on your questions, I seriously doubt if YOU can do this without one. There is a very specific procedure that has to be followed.

As far as notification by publication (running an ad in the paper), a JUDGE would have to approve this method of service. A judge will not approve this unless you have exhausted ALL other means of locating him. If it is approved, it must be worded EXACTLY as the court requires or it is not a valid notice.

I doubt that you will find anyone here that would be willing to hold your hand and walk you through the entire process.

Thanks for replying so quickly.

Would I have to get his family involved in all of this? They know where he his and they talk to him all the time. Or would a judge not consider this as a way of tracking him down?

Thanks again!

He HAS to be notified or at least VALID attempts made to be notified of these things and the only way to prove those valid attempts would be through those ways in which the court in that jurisdiction seem appropriate.

Have you checked the laws in Nevada as to if a TPR is possible without an adoption or is an adoption also what you are looking into?

Given the fact you don't know the procedure, the answer do you question regarding a lawyer needed for this is difficult and you'll need an attorney.

In Nevada I don't need an adoption. I can just do TPR on my own.
You may not need a step parent to adopt, but if you could do it on your own, you wouldn't be here asking how to get a TPR.
