2. Family Law--The care, control and maintenance of a child award by a court to a responsible adult. Custody involves legal custody (decision -making authority) and physical custody (caregiving authority), and as an award of custody USUALLY grants both rights.....

Joint custody- An arrangement by which both parents share the responsibility for and authority over the child at all times, although one parent may exercise primary physical custody...An award of joint custody does not necessarily mean an equal sharing of time; it does mean that the parents will consult and share equally in the child's upbringing and in decision making about upbringing. In a joint-custody arrangement, the rights, previledges, and responsibilities are shared, although not necessarily the physical custody...
