Hi there -
Quick tenant's rights question...
We currently reside in Sausalito, California (Marin County) and have been notified
that our unit will need to be fumigated for termites. We've agreed
to vacate the premise for a week 7.24-7.29 (the time necessary for
the completion of the job) and was wondering about a few issues on
the legal front:
- Do we have to pay rent for the week we're required to be out of
our home?
- The landlord proposed to re-imburse us $100/day for alternate
living arrangements. We find this unacceptable. I was able to
secure space for $150/ night (in San Francisco, proper) for a week.
This is the cost of just the room, not including 6 days of meals
(breakfast/lunch/dinner) we weren't able to cook in our kitchen. Can
we legally require our landlord to re-imburse us for a) the added
cost of the room ($50 over her proposal) and b) re-imburse us for
meals?
- Additionally, there is hardship incurred as we've got to make
arrangements to secure our home and remove sensitve items (the
exterminator recommends we remove all plants, couch cusions, jewlery,
bath items, food, dishware, and more...) is there hardship we can
claim on this front?
Thanks and regards and I hope to hear from you soon.
