If California is typical, it goes like this: first a 3-day notice to pay rent or quit. If you don't pay and don't quit (move out) then the owner files an unlawful detainer law suit and serves it on you with a five day summons. If you avoid service, this may take a few days. Depending on how you are served, you have a week to two weeks to file a response in court. Once you file a response, a trial is set, usually within the month. If you lose the trial, the judgment against you is taken to the sheriff, and you are given a notice of impending eviction. The whole process takes from 6 weeks to two months.

In Washington, if your court response doesn't include a (good) check for the full amount of the rent, late fees, and eviction filing fee you owe, you don't get a trial. The landlord can get an automatic writ of restitution one hour after the response deadline. The sheriff serves you or posts it on your door, then comes back at the appointed time to keep the peace while your stuff is moved to "the nearest public streetside." I usually get my tenants out about 18 days after the 3-day notice.
