What is the name of your state?What is the name of your state?What is the name of your state? Texas

I bought my daughter a 2001 VW New Beetle in December of 2004. Yesterday I had the rare occasion to drive it and noticed the inspection sticker showed mileage at the time of inspection (11/13/2004) of 43,457. The odometer currently reads 37,209. When I returned home, I pulled out the paper work from the transaction and found the odometer disclosure statement signed by the dealer and showing mileage of 36,477 on 12/18/04. Curious what Carfax had to say, I ordered one of their reports. Amongst numerous dates it shows the following:
11/02/2004 - 36,432 - Auto Auction
11/13/2004 - no mileage reported - Texas inspection station;
11/24/2004 - 36,458 - Dealer Inventory;
1/28/2005 - 36,477 - Title issued.

I also pulled the owner's manual out of the glovebox to see if there was any additional info. Tucked inside the binder is a Texas Vehicle Inspection Report dated 11/13/2004 and performed by the dealer I purchased the vehicle from. It shows a mileage reading of 43,457! Since the auto auction showed a mileage of 36,432 just 11 days before the inspection, I suppose the inspection mileage could have been recorded in error? (Also interesting that Carfax does report the inspection taking place, but not the mileage reported).

A quick visit to the NADA website, shows the vehicle would appraise for $175 less using the 43457 mileage vs. the 36477 on the disclosure statement. The current retail value is less than what I paid ($10,891). I found the vehicle on the internet and it was priced approx. $3000 less than comparable vehicles and was $2000 less than the price listed on the lot. When I showed them the internet ad they said that it was a mistake, but they'd honor the price if I bought it that day, which I did.

I'm not sure I'll get much if anything out of this discovery, but I don't want to be the one who is accused of the odometer tampering.

Would love to hear other's opinions!
