hey im looking for the knowlodge of a lawyer. I have a question: Do public school systems have any right to take action IN school against a student that posted something on the internet? I guess it could be considered "cyber-bullying", but do they really have the authority to punish students on something done outside of school, and on the internet?

Yes they do. Okay or not. I can admit when I am wrong. Either way kid, try to stay out of trouble for cyberbullying because while the school may not be able to do anything to you you may find yourself in trouble with bigger authorities -- like police.

so im getting the impression that they cannot punish a child in school for something they did on the internet at their home?

p.s.- this whole thing started with our principal yelling at us at lunch. he was mad that someone was posting a picture of this kid (who is in-the-closet-gay) wearing a toga. although mean, its utterly halarious. anyway, he said that what we do on the internet isnt private, and suggestivley hinted at prosecution.

Everything from expulsions to prosecutions are being upheld every day. Any kind of threat is illegal, and therefore subject to the same laws as though the perp called the "victim" on the phone or "met him after school".

Actually you can prosecuted for it -- many many laws are involved and could potentially have been broken. Suspended? Maybe not -- was school equipment involved? And how do you know the kid is as you put it in-the-closet-gay? Sounds like you and the rest of your crew need some classes in how to respect others. Truthfully if I were you I would hope that I would get punished at school because the alternative could be arrest or on the wrong end of a serious law suit. That I am sure you would consider "halarious" -- actually the word is hilarious but you don't pay attention in English class, do you?
