Just a little background on my situation. I was involved in an accident last week (not at fault) and dealing with the at fault party's insurance company (State Farm). Accident occurred Thursday 8/16, took it to a body shop of my choice on Friday 8/17 and received an initial repair estimate of $3400. Was suggested by body shop and State Farm to submit a pocket estimate request through State Farm app to get the ball rolling. Did that Friday afternoon and by Saturday morning had received a state farm estimate repair back of $1400, based on pictures alone.

I took it to a 2nd body shop (on State Farm's list of preferred shops) on Monday 8/20 for another "in person" inspection/estimate, and their estimate came back at about $15 higher than the pocket estimate did. Obviously the most important thing to me is to get my vehicle repaired to its original integrity and quality no matter what the final cost is, and i get the feeling that the State Farm preferred shops estimate may be so much lower than the other shop due to using non-factory parts, but I'm not sure.

Can anybody offer advice on why the 2 estimates are so drastically different? State Farm wanted me to enter my bank information into their site so they could direct deposit the claim amount, but I've been holding off, but today just received notice that they've mailed me a check for the pocket estimate amount...

Trying to decide which shop to take it to, if either, or if I need to get another estimate from a 3rd shop. If I were to go with the first shop, how would i be assured that State Farm would cover the difference between the amount they are mailing me and the body shops final total?

Also interested in pursuing the diminished value cost of my vehicle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

You need to ask for a detailed estimate to see if one is fixing something the other missed.

DO NOT cash that check until you have settled with the insurance company on the higher amount.

Thanks for the pointer, I appreciate it. I'll try to compare the 2 estimate printouts I received, it just seems like $2000 is a big difference between shops with reputable reputations, only a few miles apart. Seems convenient that the state farm preferred shop is the cheaper one

I would take it to a third shop to get another estimate. Just because.

Definitely compare the details of the estimates you receive to see where the discrepancy lies.
