I live in Georgia.
My question is :
Is there any condition or set of circustances that can exist where the vice pres in NOT nedt in line for the Presidency? I thought that there was some conditions in which the Sec of State or the Sec of Defence would ,at least for a short time, would be in charge. Did I dream that? It's driving me nutts! Thanks for any info.

The Secretary of State is pretty far down on the list behind th VP, the Speaker of the House, and the President Pro Tempre of the Senate. Since the 25th amendment the president just keeps refilling the vice president job so it's unlikely barring some catastrophe in quick succession to get down to even the Speaker.

You may be recalling the Al Haig "I'm in control here" incident when Reagan was shot. Lots of people jumped all over Haig pointing out that he was way down the list. Haig (and I think this is clear once you read his entire statement) was talking about who was operationally handling things in the executive branch until the VP got back rather than lines of succession.
