I am currently a college student in Maine and over Spring Break there was a series of thefts. Seven rooms in my wing had items stolen from them. In my room, my roommate and I shared stolen property valued at over $2000. Since it is school policy that the doors are checked by the staff members at the beginning of break and access to the building is restricted to only faculty, It its safe to assume that either they suffered a security breach in which they lost a master key, or it was simply a staff member(s) who entered the rooms and stole the items. The University Security informed us that they had a very good lead and would try to recover our items, or if not, its possible a judge could order the person to reimburse us if he was caught. However its been 2 months with not a word from security and we are looking into other options.

If it can be proven that a staff member was responsible for the stolen items, would that mean we could hold them liable?

If it can be proven that whomever stole your items, you can hold them responsible. You can also file a claim with your renter's insurance company or your parents' homeowner's insurance company. Your roommate can do the same.
