Hello,
On Saturday both my son's were arrested for entering an unlocked vehile, along with two of their friends. All the boys were released into their parents care due to no prior charges. We are waiting a court date.

On Sunday, at our family meeting, our 14 y.o. son admitted to committing this act of theft the weekend before and our 13 y.o. reported that this past weekend was his first time. Either way, they both were idiots for involving themselves with anything that breaks the law. According to the arresting officer, they have committed a felony and will await the Judges sentencing. The kids also reported to us, in detail, what they did, what they put back into the vehicles and what they kept. This information regarding other times had not been reported to the officers on Saturday night. We talked to them about coming totally clean about everything, so as to have a clear conscious and a new start. They agreed to go back to the police station and discuss the additonal information with the officer. The officer thought it important to have the detective interview the children as per their report, there has been a wave of these car thefts going on in our town. Our children reported to the detective that their friend introduced them to getting "stuff" from unlocked vehicles and the that person received the "info" from another kid. I say all this to give you an idea of what has transpired over these last two weeks. The boys stole a portable CD player and CD's, these items were turned into the officers Sunday night and the boys assited the detective.

My question is "What can we do?" Should we get an attorney or allow our judicial system to do its job. Our boys took responsibility, however, a felony charge is much worst than a misdemeanor? They did not destroy property or deface anything. They did "treaspass" onto anothers' property and stole.

If you were wondering, they are now on "lock down" until we have the hearing. They have no privileges, no playstation, tv (except on weekends, which is then limited) bikes, cell phone. We are checking into youth camps and other such programs to help them understand the seriousness of this act. They obviously did not grasp the possible danger they put themselves in, the owner would have been within his right to defend his property by shooting or using baseball bat against any trespasser.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Youth camps and other such programs might be a good place for your sons to get an education from other young boys in the criminal field.

Are you being sarcastic or what? I do realize that there is always that element of learning more "bad" behavior, then again, some of these facilities really are good. I suppose the biggest point to mention is this, how bad do the boys want to "change" inappropriae behavior!

Please Sir, we are already at our wits end, I am requesting "helpful" information.... Isn't this the form for gathering useful information and not punitive reactions?

Thank you.

No, I was not being sarcastic, nor trying to be punitive. I was never unfortunate enough to have such a problem with any of my children, but if I had I would have been pleased if they had acted as yours did when confronted. It seems to me that you are doing a competent job of raising your children and so I was only offering my honest conviction, not being a wise ass.
