My girlfriend and I share an apartment in Seattle, WA. We write separate checks for the rent and put them in an envelope (along with a list of maintenance requests), which we put in the slot into the manager's office.
This month, they opened the envelope, removed my check and the letter, and didn't remove my girlfriend's check. They thought we hadn't paid the rest of the rent, and gave us a notice to vacate five days later. We explained that we had paid and they had lost the check (presumably by leaving it in the envelope). After giving them another couple of days to find the lost check (they didn't), my girlfriend wrote them another check.
Now they want to charge us a late fee because we "didn't pay on time." How can we combat this? My girlfriend has written checks between the first and the second one to them this month, so it's listed in her check record, and we could get a bank statement. Any other advice?
