worried about financial consequences

California: I am a US Citizen, gay male, living in California. About a year ago, I married a Canadian Citizen (gay male), in Canada. We will be filing for divorce (oy vay!) and I'm curious, since the U.S. does not recongnize our union, can he come after me legally for any money. He has never worked in our time together, I supported him from the beginning, to the tune of tens-of-thousands of dollars. I've had to file bankruptcy here, already been discharged. Should I do something do protect myself from him trying to get even more money out of me? We have no written agreements as to my supporting him.

thanks.
