What is the name of your state? Arizona

A friend of mine was renting a room to a friend of his that winded up losing his job, going on unemployment yadda yadda yadda. anyway, my friend had to evict him for non payment of rent and now this other guy may be considering bankruptcy. should my friend take him to small claims *now* before he files?

It won't matter. If he files, the judgment is wiped out by the bk. If he's really serious about filing your friend will be wasting his filing fee.
