Help, my husband had surgery for a kidney stone in 2003. We received a bill for $3,350.00 due from patient. The hospital files papers with the insurance provider and we paid this amount soon after receiving the bill. In Jan. 2008 phone calls began coming in from the billing dept. for the hospital demanding that we pay $8,038.75. Every time someone called I told them the same thing.
On 6-10-08 a final notice bill is received and threatens to contact all the credit bureaus and turn the bill over to a collection agency if not paid within 10 days. My husband's employer told me to ignore them because the hospital and the insurance company were in litigation over millions of dollars.
I went in search of, and secured a copy of the cancelled check, in order to prove to them we owed nothing. I also informed them to discontinue their threats and if they chose to follow through then I would see them in court.
Another strange note is there are 2 different account numbers associated with my husband's one hospital event. Today another final notice arrives and so I called them and was informed that the insurance company refuses to pay and we have to pay the entire amount. I mentioned the account number that we paid the $3,350.00 for and the rep. said there was no account associated with my husband other than the one for $8,038.75.
Are we responsible for the amount the insurance company should have paid? If we are, then my husband and I will have to bankrupt.
Please help, help, help!
Thanks
