I took my husband to the ER with chest pains in April. While he was being admitted to the hospital, I signed his admittance papers and accepted responsibility for the portion of the bill not covered by insurance. After our insurance paid, we were notified of the balance due and immediately began making payments. We have been making payments for four months, and now we get a letter from the hospital threatening collection if we don't pay the remaining balance within 30 days. A rep in their billing office says it is their policy that the patient's portion is to be paid within 30 days of notification of the amount due. However, this was not mentioned in the paperwork that I signed accepting responsibility for paying the bill, nor was it mentioned in the letter they sent me regarding the balance due. They have accepted all of the payments I have sent so far. Can they send me to collection? We are in North Carolina. Thank you.

My response:

Sending "payments" (that YOU decided to do, and in your own created amount and schedule) over a 4 month and longer span of time, was not in the paperwork either, was it ?

So, the answer to your question is : Yes.

Not only can they do it, they will do it. They want their money - - all of it.
