What is the name of your state? IL

What is the legal time limit to file criminal charges against a person that scammed me for $1200 on Yahoo auctions? Is there either a criminal or civil statute of limitations for this type of situation? Please advise......

The easiest would be to file in their county. however, do you have a physical address for them? A P.O. box is worthless for service of process.

I understand how to proceed and where to proceed. My original question was how long is too long to initiate proceedings against him/her? Is there a certain amount of time which would make this a moot point?

In other words, what is the statute of limitations for getting screwed on the internet auctions? I'm not about to take time off, drive 5 hours each way, only to be told its too late to do anyhting about it.

Thanks

Thanks for the info......but are internet auctions such as Ebay or Yahoo considered a written contract? Are they considered verbal, or implied contracts? No one ever signs a written contract when they sign up to buy or sell on internet auctions. What is a reasonable amount of time to press the issue of not getting what I paid for?

Depends. There is no such crime as 'scamming'..... so what were the EXACT circumstances.

I sent $1200 for a piece of stereo equipment back in the summer of 2000. Since then, I've gone through the death of my daughter at 3 years old, and a divorce. Stereo stuff hasn't been the first thing on my mind for quite awhile. Now that the smoke has cleared in my personal life, I'm just wondering if its too late to go after this guy that never sent me my merchandise.

The time for having filed a criminal complaint is LONG gone on this one... and the SOL (Statute of Limitations) for breach of a verbal agreement in IL is five years... would would have expired.... or very likely be about to expire.
