What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Tennessee

As a result of my alcohol addiction (I’m in recovery now - 2 years) I ended up with a CitiBank Credit card with $10,000 on it that has been in collections since 2016. The account is closed but I am now being taken to court on 8/14 by Mendelson Law Firm out of Memphis, TN. (I am in Nashville) for the full amount.

There is simply no way I can pay this all back. I am self employed with a minimal monthly income. I’m really just looking to see if anyone has any suggetions to what my options are.

I’ll try to give you as much information as I can (as I’ve read a few other threads) in order to help you help me…

1. I was served a summons on 6/29 via courier (summons was issued on 6/5) for a court date on 8/14

2. I pulled my credit report (Equifax) and the account Is on there. It’s closed now but shows up in the “Collections” part of my credit report.

3. The Creditor curently (as listed on my credit report) is Cavalry Portfolio Services. However, I have paperwork from 3 different collection agencies that have owned this account in the past 2 years. 6/22/16 - Monarch Recovery Management. 8/19/16 - Northland Group Inc and most recently, 10/5/16 - Cavalry.

A few questions I have are:

1. Should I call the law firm to try to settle?

2. Should I consult with a lawyer / bring one to court with me?

3. Is there a way to delay this court date or get a continuance so I can try to figure this out further?

I do have all the paperwork I was served and can post it here (with sensitive info blacked out) if anyone thinks that would help.

Thanks so much!
