My elderly aunt incurred medical dept in 2000. All have been paid, save one bill. She was paying $50 a month, and had the bill down to $200. I know. I was making out the bills for them. Suddenly the MD stopped sending the monthy bill. We waited, we called, no bill. My uncle refuse to make payment without a paper bill. That was just over a year ago. Yesterday, my aunt receive a bill from this MD for $485. with the hand written message: "Please remit balance due in full. Thank you." We are willing to pay the $200 if we have to, but not $485. We have from time to time received a Medicare statement that states a doctor did not submit this bill within one year and therefore you are not responsible for it. Would this one year rule apply in this situation? Do we pay. If so, how much?

My suggestion would be: Compose a letter requesting an itemization of the bill tally. Explain that you are disputing the final amount and need to have a proper record of it. Let them know you are willing to pay once you have such document. Send via Certified mail return receipt. Save all copies of correspondence. Save the green card .
