i live in st. charles, mo. i bought the townhome in september 1998 at that time i didn't receive any covenants, instructions on where to pay my monthly fees or who to pay them to. in march 2000 we replaced our existing rusting six-pane window door and screen door with a solid cedar door and new pella screen door. we made these improvements with our own money. in august 2000 we received a letter from the association stating that our door was not compliant with the covenants, and that i needed to submit my changes to the board for approval. i informed them i didn't have a copy of the covenants so they sent me a copy. the covenant in question never specifically states anything about doors, it only says exterior structures. i submitted pictures of my door to the board. in january 2000 they said that i had to replace my new door with the original door or a door that was similiar by april 15 2000. in the same covenants it states that they have to respond to my submitance in 30 days which they failed to do. i informed them of this and also informed them that i wasn't going to replace my door. i asked them what type of action they were going to pursue at least two times and never got an answer. now june 2000 i received of summons to go to court over the above stated matter. what are my options.

did i mention that there are about 100 units, and i would say that there are at least 40 different screen door, door combinations. do you still think we are wrong without having any type of covenants to refer to and all the different door schemes in our complex.

Yes, because you could have preventing these problems by getting prior approval of the door from those dingbats first.
