Transferring custody to another state

What is the name of your state? Virginia
I have primary joint custody in Va now, however, I am planning to move to NY soon. The non-custodial parent lives in NY as well. Since we had a very contentious custody battle, I want to be certain that the VA custody order can transfer to NY? I realize once I move there he could probably block me from ever leaving the state as long as the children are minors, and that it doesn't prevent him from attempting to regain custody again. What are my options? I'm worried sick about this...

If the orders were made in VA., and you move to NY , VA. would no longer retain Jurisdiction .

The VA. orders should be registered in NY , as foreign Custody orders , Certified copy of course . Then NY could take over Jurisdiction .

Even if you don't move, it doesn't prevent him from seeking custody again.

You go to , or send a request to the Court Clerks or records in the VA. Court that issued the orders , and obtain a Certified copy of the Orders .

You then send them to the Nearest Family Court in Dad's area in NY , and request the Court to register them , as a Foreign Custody Order into records .

Even if you don't , once you have officially moved to NY , Dad can file in NY , and upon proof you and child(ren) are now permanent residence of NY , NY can retain Jurisdiction .

He could file modification showing a change in circumstances , no matter what is done , or whether you move or not .
