What is the name of your state? California
My ex-husband is planning to take our son on a trip to Israel this summer. His entire family is there, and he is a native of that country. He has lived her for about thirty years. He has no work here, and doesn't own a home here. He does have some commercial properties in other states.

What do you all suggest in terms of assuaging my fears of him taking our child to Israel and keeping him there? I've heard lots of horror stories about this.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First of all, what do your court orders say? Do you have custody or does he? Does your son already have a passport?

My response:

Hey, there's nothing like purposefully putting your child in "harm's way" by sending the child into a war zone!

Personally, I think your child might enjoy Baghdad a little better.

Hmmmmm....this is what I was thinking but was being nice since it is Mothers Day LOL. IMO I would NEVER let my child go over there.

I have primary custody. Our son already has a passport. In terms of the dangers - it is definitely less dangerous than Iraq or Iran, it sounds scarier than it is. That issue aside, I am most worried at this point about what my recourse would be if his Dad decides not to bring him back. (Israel is a member of the Hague Convention - for what that's worth).

My response:

. . . . until that suicide bomber lights up the bus your kid happens to be riding! Then, it's all just as dangerous. Don't you just love playing "Russian Roulette" with your kid?

Get into court to have the court determine whether your ex is a flight risk. If he's determined to be a flight risk, then he'll have to put up a 1 million dollar bond.

You have said yourself that he has nothing in this country, pretty much all he has is his son, so if brings him back home where he has family and everything else....well, you know the man better than any of us do, but I would do everything in my power to prevent that disguised "vacation".

Hague convention or not, that part of the world shows no cooperation with anything other than their own very twisted and sexists so called "laws".

My response:

By the way, this is what you get for marrying a foreigner! And, you thought it was all "hugs and kisses" helping him to get his Green Card, and then he dumps your ass!

Maybe next time, you'll find an American instead of trying to "change" some foreigner. That way, you won't have to put up with your next ex-husband trying to take a child in Israel, or some other god-forsaken foreign country, and worrying whether he'll return with the child.

Serves you right.
