What is the name of your state? Califorina

I have a friend that lost her mother from cancer. She was sick only a short time, and in passing she left a trust.
The step father is currently the trustee. The girls are of the understanding that they are co- excutors.
Can the step dad keep them from seeing the trust? Can he also do as he pleases with the ranch, untill he dies? Can he spend all the money leaving nothing to the girls?

I don't understand how trusts work. I know you may be able to explain

Thank YouWhat is the name of your state?

Are these girls adults or younger?

Do they know where the will is or who has it or have they checked at the county courthouse probate court to see if it has been filed?

What is the value of the trust?

They have the right to ask trustee for a copy of the trust by sending him a certified letter, and it would be more effective for them to get an attorney to do it on their behalf since father would be less likely to ignore the request.

They need to ask father for a copy of the will and the trust and if he won't cooperate, get their own attorney to make him more forthcoming in providing details.

They have contacted an attorney. I was asked if I knew, and I said I would pose these questions online while they wait for their attorney to request the infomation by mail. Apparently they weren't told by their attorney.

Save your condensending remarks for someone else:rolleyes:

Don,
The girls are both adults.
They have a copy of the will, but the according to them, there lawyer hasn't done anything except write a couple of leters.

The value of the trust is an IRA and a Ranch home valued over a million, with a small morgtage.

They did ask the step dad, and he responded that it wasn't any of their bussiness.
I guess they are just wondering to what to expect
I don't know if the will has been probated

Thank you for your help.

The stuff that ma put in the trust does not go through probate. If the purported beneficiaries of the trust want to see what is in it and the trustee will not let them see it, then they will have to file an lawsuit demanding an accounting.

If, of course, the trust left them nothing, then they will be hit with some very big legal bills.

And yes, the girls can be disinherited.

Wills are public record. Check with the courthouse in the county where the deceased was domiciled and get a copy of the file if probate has been opened.

Time for them to get an attorney and it WILL be worth it for them. If they are co-executors and named as such in the will, they have every right to receive a copy of the will, and the trust as well. I can't figure out why father is being so mean about this unless he is mad about whatever he got from the trust or maybe he isn't named in it at all.
