New law recently passed for "truth in sentencing."

Does that mean the sentences cannot coincide (be concurrent)?

For example: A man is convicted of two violent crimes - each carrying a sentence of, say, six years. Does he serve six, or twelve? 2nd degree offense was the biggie.

My friend is the victim here. We can't remember what happened at the last court date. I thought it was seven (and, then another seven). She remembers thirty. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

No, the Truth In Sentencing law doesn't change the judges discretion to issue concurrent sentences. It replaces the old indeterminate sentence length (which was usually never over 2/3 of the actual sentenced amount) with definite periods of prison followed by a definite period of parole.

Unless the judge specifically ordered them to be consecutive, they are presumed concurrent. Your friend (or his lawyer) will need to actually see what the sentence order says rather than relying on his faulty memory.

What's the difference between a "mandatory release" vs "extended supervision?" "Maximum discharge is 6-24-37" This guy was convicted of a 940.225(c) - second degree sexual assault. Is there a parole/probation time? Will the victim (my friend) get notified? She would like to stay pro-active, but at the same time, she needs to move on.
