What is the name of your state?New York state--current residence.
College: New Hampshire with a campus in the U.K.
I attended college, finishing my requirements for my Bachelor's in 1995. I spent 3 years at a campus overseas which has subsequently closed down. During matriculation I was awarded a collegiate scholarship, as well as federal loans to cover the cost of tuition and room and board. I also did work study.
It was my understanding that my scholarship, work study, and loans covered everything. I am still repaying the loans, but now (nearly 10 years later) the New Hampshire branch of the closed school claims I owe them money.
From my perspective, this claim has come out of the blue. I am worried about my credit rating however, and my undergraduate transcripts are now frozen.
Since contacting me this winter, I've spoken to them via phone and mail. Now they say they've sent numerous postal notifications over the past decade, soliciting payment. The address they claim they sent materials to has never been my residence. I have no idea how they got that address. They did not use the address I provided in school records. So I've never seen those alleged notifications.
They have provided an account summary, but upon close examination, it has accounting errors/ommissions.
I dispute their claim on my account, but I'm not sure what legal options I have at this point. I have not sent them any additional money. They aren't threatening a lawsuit, but they have contacted a collection agency.
All of this nearly 10 years after the fact.
Any advice is welcome
