Woman's death stuns community; estranged spouses worked against domestic violence
Donna knew about domestic violence, but it wasn’t enough to prevent her from becoming a victim.
On New Year’s Eve, Donna, who was the president of the Aid to Abused People Board of Directors, and her estranged husband, Scott , a former prosecutor at the County Attorney’s Office and former justice of the peace pro tem, were found lying in pools of blood inside Donna home.
Donna suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at Regional Medical Center, said Lt. Brice of the Police Department.
Scott , who was found with a single gunshot wound to the right side of his head, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have determined the wound to be self-inflicted and the death to be a suicide, Brice said.
“They were a very prominent couple in this community,” said Brice, who knew Scott and Donna . “When it is someone close to you, it is like a double whammy.”
Brice said Donna , 46, who had gone to the police department around 4 p.m. Wednesday with an order of protection she had obtained from the County Municipal Court. She asked that officers serve the order on her husband Scott, who was at her home.
An officer went to the house at 4:56 p.m. to deliver the order of protection. Scott was asked to leave, and after gathering a few possessions he attempted to take a Smith & Wesson revolver, which the officer confiscated, Brice said. Scott left about 5:20 p.m.
“Officers followed him where he turned one way and they turned the opposite way,” Brice said.
Scott , however, returned to the residence after he turned away from police officers , Brice said.
The police department received a call at 5:24 p.m. from Donna stepdaughter, Tamara.
“ Tamara alerted the police that she had called her stepmother’s home and as the two were talking, the call was interrupted as she heard Donna say: ‘You are not supposed to be here,’ ” Brice said.
“ Tamara said she overheard parts of a short conversation, what sounded like wrestling, and then heard her stepmother say, 'He’s got a gun,' " Brice said.
At that point, Tamara called 9-1-1. Brice said just prior to Broadbent’s 9-1-1 call, a neighbor also had called after hearing gunshots.
Four officers arrived on the scene at 5:26 p.m.
Brice previously stated that Scott apparently had a friend keep the Glock 9 mm semiautomatic pistol that was used in the shootings.
New Year’s Eve was not the only recent visit made by authorities to the address, Brice said. Police had received a call to the residence on Nov. 30 regarding a threat of suicide by Scott.
Scott and Donna (the couple were married in 2001) had been friends since 1997 when they worked in the civil division of the County Attorney’s Office.
Donna was a former County public fiduciary and later worked at Adult Protective Services . More than a year ago she had opened her own public fiduciary office.
During the same time, Scott worked at the County Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted several cases involving domestic violence.
The news of the deaths has shaken those who knew the couple.
“It is a such a tragedy,” Brice said. “They were like a royal couple here.”
“She did a lot for this community and she will be greatly missed,” Head also said of Donna .
Two tragic domestic violence situations in just a few days is devastating, referring to another domestic violence situation on Dec. 26 when Bonnie Lynn, 36, was shot and killed and another man was wounded.
Her estranged husband is still outstanding.
