Hi,

I am making an app in which is to be designed for only college students to be used so they may request a ride home from a party or event. I am requiring a valid .edu email for sign up. I realize this is similar to Uber, but this app is not really for profit, as I care about my fellow students getting home safely, and not getting behind the wheel drunk or high - additionally, we only charge a flat rate of $2/person, and most uber drivers do not want to deal with the drunk students that are on the verge of throwing up.

Question being, legally, what do I need to have in place to protect myself from people using the app? Are there any legal ramifications that I should be aware of?

Thank you!

There are a whole host of potential problems with your planned app.

Who will be picking the students up? How do you intend to screen these individuals to guarantee the riders are in safe vehicles driven by safe drivers?

Most colleges and universities offer services such as the one you wish to address with your app, and the services are free to students.

I do not see much of a future for your app - although your concern for the safety of students is admirable. You can discuss your proposed app with an attorney in your area who can detail for you the obstacles you must overcome and discuss with you the costs (e.g., liability insurance).
