Umbrella insurance and legal bond coverage

Hi,

I'm considering buying umbrella liability insurance. I've heard that some of them provide a card that can be used for bond if the insured is arrested. As an african-american male who drives an expensive car (PhD electrical engineering, nearly a dozen licensed patents, no I'm not ghetto) I consider the risk of arbitrary arrest to be on par with the risk of an arbitrary lawsuit.

Since I will likely be buying umbrella insurance, I would like to find a carrier that offers this type of benefit as well. Right now, my car & homeowners are with AAA of Northern California, but can consider carriers that offer detached umbrella insurance.

I have no idea what "card" you could be referring to. Regular old homeowners and auto insurance offers usually $250 of this coverage. You don't need an umbrella policy for this. This is not some additional benefit of umbrella coverage. And its $250. If you believe yourself to be profiled, move or memorize your attorney's phone number.

You may have a better chance of being pulled over but that's not the same as being arrested for no reason. You wouldn't need bail unless you were actually charged with something.

A lot depends on what is mentioned in the excess liability coverage of your Umbrella insurance. If specifically mentioned, excess liability is known to include protection against non-business related personal injury liabilities as well. These could include wrongful eviction, false arrest, slander, and libel. Basically varies from carrier to carrier.
