Can a tenant in a month to month lease, in the absence of any written agreement, allow a subtenant to move into the premises without the permission of the landlord? What recourse does the landlord have for removal of the unauthorized subtenant?

Probably not much, you would have to evict the tenant and all occupants , so give them a 30 day notice and start legal proceedings if they refuse to vacate.

And next time DONT BE SO STUPID...get all of your tenants to sign leases or dont rent to them!
