I live in Ohio. My son used my car without my permission in December. I called the police and they picked him up in my driveway upon his return. He had only a temporary permit and was charged with driving without a licensed driver. The arresting office told me I could file unauthorized use charges against him. He told me to discuss it with the Juvenile officer. My son went to traffic court and lost his license for 90 days and was fined $103. He has since gotten a job and paid the $103 fine. The Juvenile officer told me I had to charge unauthorized use charges because I was in a catch-22 situation. If i did not file charges, I would be charged with allowing him to drive without a license. Can these charges be dropped? I feel he has learned his lesson by having his license taken away and do not believe he will do it again? He is due to appear in court on May 2 for the unauthorized use charges.

Ah, yes. Your kid reminds me of me. When I was his age, I took my father's "muscle car" for a trip . . . a 350 mile trip to San Francisco. I was averaging between 105 and 110 mph all the way. I made it there in 3 hours and 48 minutes - normally a 7 hour drive !! From my standpoint, it was exhilerating, exciting and terrific. This is what guys do to see a girl. Oh, the hormones were raging !! Anyway, the police were called by my parents and, in those days, the cop very nearly choked me out of the car, and then I had to contend with my father's belt. Suffice it to say, I never did that again.
Anywho, you are in a Catch-22 situation; the authorities want to hang someone for what your son did - - it's either him or you. However, like the lesson I learned, I would suggest that you file the charges so he can learn that there's all sorts of problems he can cause when he does something, well, not so bright. And, in any event, his record is sealed after he turns 18. Good luck !
