My 19 year old son was arrested for purchasing alcohol with a fake ID. I am considering getting legal counsel to make sure all options are covered regarding the penalties. Is this advisable or should he just plead guilty and take the penalties? Are there any possible defense that could reduce his penalties (i.e. Drinking Awareness classes, community service, etc.)? Will this conviction remain on his record? Can any measures be taken post conviction to have the record expunged after a period of no offenses, etc.?

I have to concur with the other posts. Your son feels he's old enough to buy booze illegally. He's also an adult. Let him hire his own attorney. And yes, I have a teen who will be a legal adult shortly. He knows that's my stance.

I agree with the others, he is according to the law an 'adult'. Allow him to understand the full responsibility and consequences of his actions. I do understand as a mother you will always be worried and want to help your child but in this case it might be best to let him know you are there to support him. Give him the resources to stand on his own and find appropriate representation. Don't leave him hanging alone but also be sure not to carry him, best to just stand by him if that makes sense.
