The answer is, yes, you could file for unemployment benefits while on furlough for that one day of one week. People can always file for their unemployment benefits. However, most states have a "waiting week" before you can draw a paying week of unemployment benefits, so if you were only off for one day of one week, you'd have a claim set up that would stay in place for one year from the date it was filed, but.....

In order to draw unemployment benefits, your gross pay for that week Sunday through Saturday, regardless of how many days you worked, would have to drop below the WBA (Weekly Benefit Amount) on the claim you set up. There is a maximum WBA in your state. If you do not go below that amount, even though your pay has been reduced somewhat, you would not qualify for partial unemployment benefits for that week, and would not even be able to set it up as your waiting week.
