What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Indiana, Our home office is in Alabama and are a nation wide company and Canada. I am a hydraulic technition. I rent uniforms on my own and pay $8.62 a week for 11 short sleeve 11 long sleeve and 11 pants. I opted for this to save wear and tear on my washer and dryer. (company does not contribute towards uniforms) now the company wants all service personel to look alike nationwide. They will buy 6 shirts 3 coveralls and we have to buy our own pants. We are also responsible for laundry and pressing (not an option). These uniforms at times get real greasy. A dry cleaner will cost $30-$40 a week. My question is: can my company make me pay this higher cost out of my own pocket?
Thanks Garth

This is the only thing I could find at Indiana's DOL web site regarding uniforms

Indiana law does not allow employers to deduct the cost of mandatory uniforms from an employee's paycheck. However, it does allow employers to deduct the purchase price of merchandise sold by the employer to an employee if it is at the request of the employee. With this said, if the uniform is optional and the employee makes a written request for the deduction, the cost may be deducted from the employees wages.

which really isn't on-point. I suggest you contact IN's DOL directly and inquire whether you can be required to pay for the cost of laundering/cleaning company mandated uniforms. This varies considerably by State.

**A: then that's discrimination. Why can't we wear hot pants, tube tops and thongs like you girls?

HG, you can wear them if you want to, but then you have to wear the stilettos, too!

And, um...Beth...there are some WOMEN no one wants to see in hot pants, tube top, and a thong! :D
