My wife hit a parked car (no one inside) as she reversed, She drove out of panic, switched driving with me, and we continued on our way. As we headed home within an hour, we came upon the police who were called by the car's current user. It turned out that we were driving without insurance, suspended registration and evasion of the accident was cited. All of this we readily admitted to the police and the other party and my wife was issued a summons. We took it upon ourselves to compose a letter to the other party, offering our apologies of the incident and offering to pay any reasonable amount for the damage. The damage was a slight dent of the hood near the latch. As we found out later, the car was actually owned by the party's uncle and a conversation the next day resulted in advising the other party to contact her uncle with our phone number to discuss the matter.

A week has past and there has been no contact. Also, we have heard conversations by the other party looking to enrich herself over the matter and it has turned a bad situation even worse. It was further complicated by a police call by this party, accusing us of bike theft ( a charge yet to be proven as the police have not returned with any investigation result), a purely fictional accuation brought out by her snopping into our personal storage area without permission. It is clear that reasonable dialogue will be difficult, if not impossible to resolve the matter, especially since the other party falsely claims passengers were inside the car during the accident. Yet, I do realize that our uninsured, unregistered and evasive charges are serious enough to make us nearly entirely liable. Is there any advice (beyond getting insurance and registration done, which we did afterwards) that would fit this situaton?>What is the name of your state?

Tell your wife to look in the mirror when she's backing up. Also, tell her to take responsibility for her actions not when she gets caught, but when it happens. Looks like you're going to have to eat this one and learn from your mistake

No, not much you can do other then wait for them to send you the bill.
And wait for the police to come for your wife (and possibly you for 'obstruction' for 'flipping seats').
I suggest you get yourself prepared for some potentially SERIOUS criminal issues in addition to the civil liability.

Oh, and there is no way that anyone here (or the police) will believe your spin that she 'drove out of panic'.... especially with you in the car also. Far more likely that she was purposely fleeing.

follow-up

There were police called to the scene and my wife was ticketed for unsafe backing, failure to carry insurance and evasion. My role in this was not made clear at the time. There was some input by the officer in that he suggested auto insurance needed to be purchased (of course, it is not material for this claim since it is after the fact but it was suggested that it could help the criminal case in rectifying the situation). The injuried party has the information for our address and phone and have stated verbally and by personal letter that we stand ready to provide any reasonable amount towards damage to the vehicle. To date, there has been no reply by the owner
