Can I be required to join the union and pay the union dues or am I allowed to pay an agency fee and not join the union.

I object to having to pay money to support the unions political activities but our current contract states that I have to join the union to work here. It does not allow for an agency fee only type arrangement. Is this legal here in Connecticut??
