Unmarried couple having baby - father's rights

my domestic partner and I are having a baby - we are a m/f couple and I want the baby to have his last name. I have been told by others that the mother's name goes on the birth certificate and that father's rights are limited. how can I make sure that our baby gets his or her father's last name? I live in California.
