Unpaid portion of Hospital bills

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, underwent a masectomy, chemo and radiation treatments as well as many test and hospital stays. My insurance company changed administrators and the bills are not being paid in a timely manner. I have been turned over to collection agencys for delinquent accounts. My question is whether or not the hospital or other medical institutions can attach my property or bank accounts to collect these bills.

It is my understanding that your wages/bank account cannot be attached without a prior court judgement. I don't believe they can attach/lien your house for unpaid medical bills, again unless they have a court judgment. I was curious, how long ago did you have the surgery? Additionally, unless the hospital is contracted with your insurance company, you are liable for the balance. They bill your insurance company only as a courtesy and are not required to wait for insurance payments to arrive.
