We own property in Middle Tennessee. We purchased the property in 2002 from previous owner - who owned the property for 20+ years. When the original owner transferred the property to the previous owner, there was a small portion of taxes that was omitted in error from this conveyance, leaving this small portion still assessed in original owner's name. Since we are now claiming this property, the attorney for the original owner indicates that we are responsible for this unpaid debt. Are we liable for this delinquent tax burden? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Yes and no. Not to the attorney's client (absent specific provisions in the sales contract), but maybe to the tax authorities. The first thing I would do is contact the title insurer.
