When i was 19 me and my boyfriend got an apartment togeather, well as time went by he lost his job, and we had some bills that were past due, about $500 i think and we seeked advice from a get out of dept company now mind you at the time owing $500 was alot to us we we nervous and mostly he owed it, not me, so this company calls us and we setup an appointment with her and she comes to our appartment and we told her we owed about $500.00 what can we do she said that is not enough dept to do anything so she said she could do something for us, she said to claim a chapter 7, i did not know what a chapter 7 was she said it was where you go to the court and say you don't have the money to pay and they will file it with the creditors, but we did not have anybody big to come after us like that, so anyway then she said in about a month go back to the court and it discarged and pay what you owe in little payments, and that would be it. Well needless to say 6.5 years later this thing is still on my credit report as a discarged bankruptcy and as the years have gone by i looked more and more into getting info on how i was able to claim a chapter 7 when i only owed about 500.00 dollers and that was not even all mine, it was mostly my ex. I was scammed some how. I had to pay this women i remember at the time i think 50 or 75 dollars to get the money i owed in payments instead of collections being filed by them. So i was scammed and now i have a discarged Bankruptcy on my credit report, when i did not even have any real credit at the time, so everything else on my credit is good but this one thing, and there is not supporting history for me to have to file a bankruptcy. It was a total mislead thing that i was told to do. I don't know what to do now, i am trying to buy a home now with my husband and this is hurting my credit score a little. Is there a way to prove that i did not owe anybody and i was mislead into this. I don't know what else to do, i want this off my credit report now, I was 19, the court where i went to file did not even ask for proof of owing anything. I owed nobody anything big but $500 to like the phone company or and half owed on my rent. What should i do, This is on my credit report with no supporting proof. Help. This is the craziest thing ever. As they say Young and Nieve is a true saying. I look back and say how dump could i have possibley been. I can't beleive i belived this women. Please help

Well, I'm not a lawyer, but I think the most "Unreal" thing you've ever done was to file bankruptcy over a $500.00 debt! Couldn't you have washed cars on the weekend for 30-60 days to pay off the debt?? It would have been smarter to go into collections than to file bk. If so, it would have rolled off of your credit report in about six-months or so, from today. Not the bankruptcy.

Who New

Hello, I said i was 19 that was in 1997, The person who was suposely helping us said it would not be on my credit report becouse it would be dismissed. We did not know our options and with no family members to consult to about it so yea as i think of it almost 10 years later, that could of been an option.

I would think almost 7 years after filing, it's a little late to come back and say "Well Gee, I was young and niave and didn't know what I was doing!"
Filing over $500 that supposedly wasn't even yours was incredibly stupid, but after so long you'd be better to just wait the additional 3 years or so until it drops by itself.

Whether you felt like you were duped, or not. It's up to you to get the facts and do some research instead of believing someone's word that it wouldn't be on your credit report. Even the LITTLEST bit of investigation would have told you that was completely untrue.

If you've improved your credit, like you said you have, then an almost decade old bankrupcty is not going to do too much harm to you.

Unfortunately, you DID file bankruptcy. It doesn't matter at all now, NINE years later, that you realize you were totally clueless and were scammed. It makes no difference, the public record of your bankruptcy can stay for 10 years.

HOWEVER, that doesn't make it hopeless. You can certainly try to dispute the bankruptcy with the credit bureaus and you might get it off, it's only got a year to go as it is. Since it IS that old, you have a much better chance of getting it disputed off now.

Go over to www.creditboards.com and read up on how to write a dispute letter to the 3 credit bureaus.

Oh.. and next time.. try some paragraphs and punctuation when you write .. it helps !
