Ebay Seller is in CA.

I am not in the US but in the UK.
I appreciate that you cannot comment on UK law.

I purchased a new (not used) camera on UK ebay but the seller is in CA.

My understanding is that US law applies on the issue of returns because my contract is with a US trader.
The goods were shipped from a UK warehouse and I paid in Pounds Sterling using Paypal.

The camera failed after 1 hours use. I spent a week of unanswered emails and phone calls trying to contact the seller to find out how to return the camera.
Finally I get an answer telling me to send the camera back to Taiwan where it was made.

Does US law allow that the Seller insists the goods are sent back to the manufacturer?
In US law is the Seller responsible for the transportation costs of returns?

There are no laws that cover your situation. US retailers have no obligation to accept returns or give refunds, it is strictly a matter of company policy. If the seller was an authorized seller of the item, you will have to look at the manufacturer for repair or replacement. Buying locally and supporting the hometown merchant can have it's benefits as you have now discovered.

The clarification was very valuable. Thanks.
A surprising (to me) answer but the main thing is that I know the seller is acting 'reasonably'. It was good to get this clear quickly.
