Use of deceased celebrity images in feature film

We are considering using artististically rendered 3D images of various deceased celebrities in an animated feature film - possible examples are John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Che Guevara, etc.

Are there legal issues we need to consider? How can we get solid information on this issue?
