I live in NJ and bought a used car in a private sale. Before purchasing it, I asked if the car was ever in an
accident and the seller told me no. After giving him a check and driving it home, I noticed evidence of it being in an accident. I no longer want the car. Do I have any legal recourse? Thank you.

My response:

No.

You should have had your car inspected before you purchased it. The seller has deniability - "Your Honor, I swear on a stack of Bibles that the Plaintiff NEVER asked me if the car was ever in an accident."

You bought a car. It's yours now. In a private sale, there are no warranties, guaranties, or otherwise - - unless it's in writing.
