i have been an emplyee at a machine shop for 13 years and have accumulated 3 weeks of paid vacation and 2 paid personal holidays. In two years I will gain one more week of paid vacation. Should an employer have the power to dictate when an employee should use his vacation time whether for personal time or family time or hobbies (hunting, fishing, etc.) Is there any law that governs vacation time? or wheter employers have a right to tell you when to take your time off? Furthermore, this is a small non-union shop with 22 employees.

I am not aware of any statutory requirement allowing an employer to restrict your vacation schedule, nor is he prevented from doing so.

Bottom line...
Your vacation time is employer-paid time off, and there is nothing wrong with the employer setting some conditions, within reason, for your taking it.
