What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Indiana. We recently purchased an SUV in Indiana. We completed a bill of sale and also a receipt to confirm the second payment. We took possession of the SUV on one night after paying $1800 towards the cost. We wrote out a bill of sale for this amount. They did not have a title present that night. A few nights later we got a text message and Facebook message from the guy who owned the vehicle, saying he had received the title and signed it, but he was at work and we would have to meet his fiance. We met her and had her sign a hand written receipt confirming she received the remaining $550. She then handed us the signed title. That same night he went online and filed for another title. Since they did this the BMV said our title is null and void and we cannot register the vehicle. They are also trying to say we stole the SUV. We have all signed documents, although none are notarized. We also have the signed title and all of the Facebook messages and text messages showing all of the things he told us about signing the title and also stuff we had him send us before we bought it or made up the original bill of sale, showing us on the BMV website that it was a clean and clear title and owned by him. When he gets the new title can he report the suv stolen and take it back from us and us get in trouble for stealing it, even though we have all the proof showing that we legally bought it?
