What is the name of your state? Wisconsin

I am a college student, and I have gone through quite a bit of grief this semester from the instructor for one of my classes. It culminated Thursday when he singled me out and specifically said to the entire lecture hall of students that he was going to give everyone A's in the class and not make them take the final exam except that I had gone over his head. You see, he is a very poor teacher, and I had talked to him twice about his teaching. He was unwilling to change, and we weren't learning anything in the class (yes, I do want to learn something if I have to pay $600+ for the class!) I then went to the chair of the department and let him know what was happening. He told me that a couple other students had also expressed issues with this teacher this semester. Since then, the teacher has picked on me a little, but he went way over the top Thursday with all of his comments. I left class feeling humiliated and exasperated. A couple of the other students in the class who have also wanted to learn and studied with me for a previous test were even more upset than me and wanted to confront the teacher in a more-or-less hostile manner. However, I didn't want to get in trouble for anything, and I don't want this to be bigger than it must be. The only problem is that I wasn't able to concentrate in my next class after he harassed me in front of the entire class, so I didn't really get anything out of the review for the exam. I've lost sleep over this and have been unable to focus on my studying because I worry about what the other students or my teacher will do to me. I have already had two students swear at me and one of them threatened me after class Thursday.

What can I do? Can I take legal action in any way? I feel like my teacher has ruined my grades since he did this right before exam week. Please let me know what my options are or where I can find out more information about what can be done.

Thank you!

I don't know if there is anything you can do legally, but you could go to the department head again and tell him what happened. I just wonder what is it you are hoping will happen? It is finals week, so you had better find some way to concentrate.

Just out of curiosity, what's your major? I go to UWM too and I was just wondering. Is it grad or undergrad? If this is the way that instructor teaches, I probably want to stay away from his class!

Actually, I'm a math education major. I'm not really sure how a microeconomics course is going to help me teach math, but it's required for my major. I'm an undergraduate student, but you don't have to worry about having this teacher because he won't be teaching here anymore.

I already took Micro anyway when I was an undergrad. I'm in the grad program now.

I'm glad to see that you have a more positive outlook today. What the teacher did to you wan't fair, but I don't think it was illegal. You just have to take it up the chain of command at school to get something done about it. I've noticed that the department heads and higher ups are very approachable and will help. They also have zero tolerance for crap like this. That email episode a couple of months ago is one example. I think that student was expelled.

Well, good luck to you and good luck on your finals!
