What is the name of your state?I live in Kenosha, WI. I was recently let go from my IT Job and since have found a job but I took a cut in pay. I have been making some serious cut backs as to make ends meet for the family and I. I decided to cancel my verizon wireless account which had two phone lines under 1 account and port my phone numbers over to tracfone. I called Verizon CS and the person on the other side said that if I cancelled there would a $175.00 charge. No problem I thought. I can eat the $175 and make it up in two months without having to pay the Verizon bill. I also checked my agreement and also Customer Info Overview. The overview says:
"If you cancel during this term, a $175 early termination fee will apply."
The agreement says:
"If you cancel your service for wireless number(999) 999-9999 prior to November 24, 2005, you will be billed an early termination fee of up to $175.00"
So I go and cancel and finally get the bill and they charged me twice for the early termination fee for the account which had two phones under the one service plan.
I called and spoke with a manager who had me fax over my agreement. He said the paper work did say only $175 but since the agreement was so new, only 10 months old, that they could not reimburse one of the termination fees even though it clearly said "up to $175".
I do not have this kind of money to pay right now with having taken a cut in pay. Since the agreement, customer service rep and the customer service overview clearly say $175 termination fee why should I pay two termination fees? What can I do, if anything? How much would a lawyer cost to resolve an issue like this? Can I resolve this on my own without hiring anyone and how would I do this? It may not even be worth it but I need to try. Someone please help...
