I have recently become a Farmer's agent and, as part of that process, have signed up with Farmers Insurance Group FCU. Unfortunately, bill pay is not available to me because my "social security number matches a cancelled subscriber (sic)." I was directed to call FiServ.

The first time I called, I got a person who asked me for my name and zip code. She didn't find anything in the system and hung up on me. So, I called back. I spoke to another person and gave my name and an old zip code. A debt popped up in her system, but she refused to give me any information about it because she couldn't verify who I was. How do I verify? Well, what was your bank account number? I don't know — I closed the account in 2003. I just don't remember. Can't you call the bank? No. I filed bankruptcy and discharged all of my debts with them, so they won't discuss any debts or accounts that I used to have for legal reasons. Can't I just give you my date of birth? No. We don't have your date of birth. What about the social? It's obviously blacklisted in your system. No, we can only see the last 4 digits so we don't know that it's REALLY you. Give us your old email address. From 16 years ago? I tried a few. No, no, no.

How can I resolve this situation? Pay us. How much do I supposedly owe? We can't tell you that until we verify that you really are who you say you are. All right — what's your email? I'll email you my driver's license. No good — I don't have an email address and anyway, your driver's license wouldn't help us because we don't have that information in our system. So... what do we do? All right. It's against company policy, but I'll tell you that the payment was made on February 23, 2004 to Pacific Bell on account number ending 7405. Call Pac Bell, they'll confirm they got the payment, and then you'll know the debt is legit. While you're at it, have them tell you how much the amount was so you can pay.

Pac Bell? This company doesn't exist anymore. Apparently it got bought out by SBC Global.net, which is now AT&T California, and they have no record of me. So the "proof of debt" is nothing more than an entry in their system 16 years ago that they stick by but can't tell me about.

Nobody's going to fix this for you after 16 years. So ditch the idea of using bill pay from the CU and open an account elsewhere or keep the account you already had before you became a Farmer's agent. Or pay your bills with checks.

The OP believes that, because it's marketed as AT&T, it doesn't exist. The OP is obviously mistaken.
