What is the name of your state? MA

I have a small store and I wish to rent out video tapes and DVD s to my customers. Can I simply buy DVD s & tapes from the warehouse clubs (Bj's Costco) and rent them out or must I purchase from a distibutor ? Do I need to purchase the right to rent them out?

video rental

Thanks for the reply. I did call the listed agency . They do not handle the licencing for rental. They only handle licencing if you wish to show a movie in a public place. Does anyone have any other sugestions?

"I did call the listed agency ."
*** Why??? There was nothing in my post that would even imply that they would be responsible for licensing you.

"Does anyone have any other sugestions?"
*** Suggestions of what?? Simply, you CANNOT purchase a video at Wal-Mart (or any other retailer) and then rent that movie out for commercial purposes. The retail purchase has a single 'home-use' only license.

Get a grip.....

You posted a link , I took it as a lead. Tell you what , The sugestion needed would be for the Correct place to get the proper
license to rent the movies out. Why would you post the link if it was not meant for me to check out? I guess you get what you pay for. Maybe you should look at just where that link takes you!

The link I provided was to try (unsuccessfully) to show you that you could NOT do what you were trying to do.

Let me try this for the THIRD time. There are no 'secret' licenses that would allow you to purchase a 'single home-use only' video or DVD and rent it out.

Do you FINALLY understand that???

arn't we touchy

Do you UNDERSTAND that you are not answering the asked question. If you live in this universe you my know that there are places that us little guys go called "video rental stores". You may have seen these in your travels. It is a fact that thes "video rental stores' rent videos . What I wanted to know in the first place was how to go about doing that in a legal manner. In your world I guess they are all doing somtjing wrong. There is obviously a legal way to counduct this business. I was looking for a bit of info on that, not condesending answers . I will now do what I should have done in the first place and place a call to an qualified attorney. Thanks you for your input I am sure you are well meaning but just not very patient. I will not be checking back so no reply is nessesary.

"Do you UNDERSTAND that you are not answering the asked question."
*** Yes I did. You have simply now 'changed' the question.

"What I wanted to know in the first place was how to go about doing that in a legal manner."
*** That is NOT what you asked. Your first post asked:
- "Can I simply buy DVD s & tapes from the warehouse clubs (Bj's Costco) and rent them out"
*** I answered NO.

- "or must I purchase from a distibutor?"
*** You MUST purchase them from ANYONE who's 'product' gives you a license to rent for profit.

and finally,
- "Do I need to purchase the right to rent them out?"
*** You need to purchase them from a source that gives you a license to rent them out.

"In your world I guess they are all doing somtjing wrong."
*** Nope. 'They' are presumably purchasing copies with the correct license. The actions you are trying to do is illegal.

"There is obviously a legal way to counduct this business."
*** Yep. Purchase them from a source that includes right to rent them out.

"I was looking for a bit of info on that, not condesending answers ."
*** You didn't get CONDESCENDING answers. You got correct answers that you simply could not understand.

"I will now do what I should have done in the first place and place a call to an qualified attorney."
*** Please do. Maybe someone that you are PAYING can help you understand this very simple concept.

"Thanks you for your input I am sure you are well meaning but just not very patient."
*** I agree. I assume that anyone who is in business would have at least a concept of how THEIR business is run. And when they don't, it is clearly frustrating for you.

"I will not be checking back so no reply is nessesary."
*** Oh, I bet you WILL reply. Come on.... just start typing. You can do it.... come on.......

Well, well, well. Sounds like ebob did not get the answer he wanted. So he argued with you.

Did he seriously think that a wal-mart movie can be rented out???

Isn't there some kind of warning before the movies play on those tapes/dvd's stating that this sort of act is illegal?

Everyone would have a video store if it worked the way you wanted to, ebob.

OK here's an example...ever lose or otherwise have to pay for one of those video store rentals? The copy from their store is going to cost you $30.00 or probably more and you can run down to your local walmart and pick it up for $9.99 to $19.99, the reason is the license. (Their movie cost them more) I know you are not listening anyway so I believe I will continue..but, I am out of crayons...yes that is condescending..just like your comment of
If you live in this universe
was.

My advice is go ahead and rent out some tapes from wal-mart, don't pay taxes on the sales and anything else that YOU think should be legal.

Good luck. Hey maybe you can get around it by buying old previewed movies from your local video store. Be aware this is a facetious answer.

Jetx I apologize for jumping in.
I am WELL aware you are capable of handling b.s., nothing like personal experience.
