'viewing' teen porn illegal??

I am not sure if I'm on the right forum. If not, I'd appreciate if anyone could direct me to the right one. This is the only one I found to be 'suitable' for this message.
I recently learned a friend was just arrested for viewing teen porn on the internet. I do not know all the facts. This is what I know-
1.About 3 months ago he was arrested for this and was in county jail for one night, released on bond, or bail was paid (not sure)
2. GBI told him to 'be at the jail' at 6:00 this morning (?)
3.He is in there for 4 months.
4.This is a 'county jail' NOT where he lives.
5. They first wanted to give him 8 yrs prison, then somehow it got changed to 4 months with 8 yrs probation?

I know none of this makes sense. First of all, is just 'viewing' teen porn illegal? If so, why and how was this person singled out? I really believe he did more than he is telling me. If GBI is involved, then it would be at a higher level than 'county jail' right?

Not sure what I am asking here. Can anyone make sense of this and what could he have REALLY done?

Not too long ago GBI watched a certain man for months on the internet to catch him in sex with many teenagers. I would understand if this is the case here, but all this for just 'viewing' porn?

Referring to something as "teen porn" is not a very good description. If the teens in the porn are underage, and assuming they haven't been emanscipated, it would be considered "child porn", which is a very serious offense.

Although, theoretically, a judge may take into consideration that the participants in the porn were 17 years old and not 8 or 9 years old. But it sounds to me like your friend may have been viewing child pornography, which is a serious offense.
