Does anyone know if Life Insurance companies are obligated to keep policy holder designated beneficiary and the amount of policy confidential?

Both. In this case family members who received information are considered general public to the beneficiary.

And how did they come to receive this information?

How the heck do you expect us to answer any questions without any facts to go on?

The fact is that insurance company released all available information upon request including beneficiary name and the amount paid.
